16/04/14 - Gulgong - Mudgee NSW

Had a look around Mudgee, about 30k down the road from Gulgong.

Visited the, now abandoned, Mudgee Railway Station which is now a craft outlet.

Also inspected the Mudgee Showground and we came to he conclusion that Wikicamps was right and Gulgong was the better choice (particularly at the price!)

Back to Gulgong for a closer look at the historic buildings there. Nearly all the buildings in the main street, as well as quite a few elsewhere in the town, are heritage listed.
Gulgong had 22,000 inhabitants in 1870 when gold was found at Red Hill.

Nellie Melba once sang at the Prince of Wales Opera House and Les Darcy fought his last fight here.

Even the Commonwealth Bank branch is in a heritage building.

Finished off the day with a nice meal in the Gulgong RSL.
